Winners' Description: Nobuyoshi Araki is one of Japan's greatest living photographers, and certainly its most controversial. Over the last forty years he has published more than 250 books, bearing testimony to his inexhaustible creative energy. His work often challenges social taboos surrounding sex and death. The brief was to create the definitive book on Araki, which would provide the most comprehensive overview of his prolific career. A luxurious object, it had to be the one book to own. The book includes a wide selection of Araki's writings, often revealing a very different person from his public persona. Intimate and unashamedly honest, they inspired me to portray the duality of Araki's personality: the conflict between his narcissistic facade and his more private and sensitive side. I chose two typefaces to express this juxtaposition, one of which (Bauer Bodoni) has a sense of monumentality, while the other (Cottonwood) is mischievous and playful.
