The week of July 11th - 16th, 2011, ADC held its fourth annual Henry Wolf Photography Workshop, an introductory photography course designed to give New York City public high school students the opportunity to meet and learn from top photographers and producers. The program is generously supported by a 10-year grant from the Henry Wolf Foundation in honor of the renowned graphic designer, photographer and past ADC president. As art director of Esquire, Harper's Bazaar and Show magazines in the 1950s and '60s, Henry Wolf held great sway over American magazine design.
Students from city-wide public high schools are given a hands-on overview of the art and trade of commercial photography from experts in the field. Each student receives a digital camera to shoot their assignments and to take home after the workshop.
Tom Starkweather, lead instructor for the workshop, introduced students to his photography, demoed the camera, mentored students through their assignments and tutored them on the editing process. Tom was joined by fellow photographer Brady Fontenot, Shannon Taggart and Kieran Antill. The students also visited the New York Times Magazine design studio to met with the Magazine's design director, Arem Duplessis and director of photography, Kathy Ryan.
In addition to shooting assignments, the students learned basics of Photoshop editing techniques. Students also visited the Aperture gallery, ICP and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (many for the first time) to view and discuss professional work.
Special thanks to Tekserve for their ongoing support of the program.
