HENRY WOLF SUMMER PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

The week of July 12th - 17th, 2010, ADC held its third-annual Henry Wolf Photography Workshop, an introductory photography course designed to give New York City public high school students the opportunity to meet and learn from top photographers and producers. The program is generously supported by a 10-year grant from the Henry Wolf Foundation in honor of the renowned graphic designer, photographer and past ADC president. As art director of Esquire, Harper's Bazaar and Show magazines in the 1950s and '60s, Henry Wolf held great sway over American magazine design.
14 students from 12 NYC public high schools were given a hands-on overview on the art and trade of photography from five experts in the field. Each student received a digital camera to shoot their assignments and to take home after the workshop.
Tom Starkweather, lead instructor for the workshop, introduced students to his street photography, demo-ed the camera and mentored students trough their assignments and tutored them on the editing process. Tom was joined by fellow photographer Will Mebane, who gave the students and assignment to shoot strangers - with and without permission. Young Guns 5 winner Christopher Lane asked the students to shoot "Nothing", introducing them to the notion and challenges of abstract photography. Finally, Aaron Taylor gave students a taste of studio photography and lighting. New to this year’s workshop was a video production component, led by Emmy Award-winning producer Elizabeth Hummer who asked students to expand the idea of the still image into a 30-second "one-shot/one-take" video.
In addition to shooting assignments, the students learned basics of Photoshop editing techniques. Students visited the Aperture gallery, ICP and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (many for the first time) to view and discuss professional work.
NY high schools participating in the workshop were Curtis High School, Murry Bergtraum High School, Port Richmond High School, Staten Island Technical High School, All City Leadership Academy, Brooklyn Technical High School, Tottenville High School, H.S. of Art & Design/(Frank Sinatra H.S), Jamaica High School, School for Excellence, Bryant High School and Bronx Leadership Academy High School.
