Art Directors Club Scholarship (Illustration)

What makes an illustration a "Tina Sweep Illustration"? Are you consciously working to develop your style, or is it something that happens organically?
My illustrations are my own because of how they express my point of view through the subject matter, mood, media, composition, design, and color. With process and exploration, my point of view has developed out of the pieces that I have produced and the work that occurs in my sketchbook. As I do more illustrations and fill more sketchbook pages, my style becomes clearer and I am able to judge what my personal point of view is and the direction where I would like to take it.

Freelancing is the nature of the illustration business. After you graduate, how do you plan to obtain commissions? Do you worry about your ability to make a living wage while building your career?
I believe the best way to obtain commissions is to seek them out personally from publication companies, both locally and nationally. Through constant self-promotion, perseverance and time management, I intend to keep moving towards national recognition. I am more worried making irreparable mistakes from inexperience than I am about making a living wage during the start-up years of my career. In general, I know what will be required of me to get my small business off the ground, but I do not know what specific issues will affect me and my business until they actually occur. That is why my connections to my family, my friends, my school and my peers within the industry are so important to me as a source of continual advice and support.

Did you ever consider a career as a fine artist? How did you make the decision to study illustration?
I have always considered myself an illustrator and not a fine artist. Initially, my art instructors in high school had informed me that I should enter the field of illustration. When I looked beyond the face value of their observations and researched my options for an art-based career, I knew that I would study illustration in order to become a professional visual problem-solver.
