MAEGAN GINDI
What are your plans for after you graduate?
After I graduate, I know I want to travel. I've been traveling around Europe this summer and I'd like to expand on where I go next. I'm leaning towards Israel and the Middle East for at least a month. After that, I will come home and spend time with family and friends before heading to Los Angeles. I've been told that I belong in New York City, but I'd like to experience a new place, even if it's only for a year. After a year, I will decide whether or not LA is for me. Personally, I think I'm a true New Yorker at heart and will wind up back here no matter how far I try to get from it sometimes.
You were a former Saturday Career Workshop participant. How has this influenced you work? What did you gain from that experience?
Honestly, I consider it kind of a starting point for my career in photography. I was very new to the visual art world, particularly photography, and it gave me hope that I could have a future in art. The term "starving artist" is heard all too often, and the Career Workshops brought in visiting, working artists. They let us know that we didn't have to suffer to do the things we loved. There are so many possible career paths that can be created with regards to art. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see that a future and a career could come from something that seemed like just be a hobby.
Discuss what inspired you.
People inspire me. The world inspires me. I love photographing people because I love hearing their stories. I want to know what drives them and what inspires them, too. I talk to them to relax them, but I really want to know their essence. I feel that a portrait is so much stronger when there is a connection between photographer and subject. Since I've been traveling, I've also been photographing the people I've met while abroad, and that's pretty exciting. Language barriers are a pretty interesting obstacle to overcome when you're behind a camera. Different people have different experiences, and I feel that enriches my life, too.
