JADE NELLANS
What kind of jobs will you be looking for after you graduate?
I think it's good to be open to a little bit of everything at first, to get a feel for the different markets. I love the freedom that comes with freelance, but in the beginning a staff position could be good security while learning what it takes to be a professional illustrator. The children's market has a strong appeal for me, and I'd also be interested in retail markets-- t-shirts and stationery and such. Since I'm always creating characters I feel those markets could be a good way to promote them.
What has inspired your brand “Jadefrolics”? Where do you see this brand taking you in the future?
The alias “Jadefrolics” came about during my childhood obsession with the virtual pet web site Neopets.com. I chose it for my username, and it just sort of stuck! To “frolic” puts images in my head of someone dancing about in a silly manner, and this seemed the right sort of image for my art. I hope to start my own product design business under this brand, which could produce anything from t-shirts to pencil cases to gourmet dog biscuits!
What inspired you to go into Illustration and not Fine Art?
I've always been drawn to the commercial and business aspect of art, and my dreams as a little girl were to try to follow the lead of creations like Pokemon and Hello Kitty. I am much more interested in creating work for print with a specific purpose, so an Illustration major was the natural choice. My professors have been wonderful in teaching me about both the business and artistic aspects in illustration, and their support has made me even more certain that I want to be an illustrator. But if it turns out people would like to see them in a gallery setting as well, that would be a nice bonus!
