From the Executive Director

In 1993, when I accepted the position of Executive Director of the Art Directors Club, the communications industry was undergoing enormous change. ADC, perhaps the oldest creative membership organization in the world, seemed, paradoxically, the one best poised for the future. ADC had a long tradition of embracing advertising, design, and culture, as well as an internationally recognized brand. The unparalleled archive of Art Directors Annuals, published continually since 1920, represented an ongoing record of the best and most innovative work of the 20th century. Preparing it for the 21st century was a challenge.

ADC's core program, the Annual Awards, had grown exponentially. Outstanding educational and professional programs have been put into place, among them the ADC Young Guns biennial, showcasing international talent age 30 and under; invitational Portfolio Reviews for top new graduates in advertising and design; the Saturday Career Workshops for artistically promising high school students; Big Brand Talks for mid-career professionals; the ADC Hall of Fame exhibitions and archive; and, most recently, Designism, an initiative to connect creatives with causes for the common good. Our current facility, which accommodating these and other activities, is spectacular. Membership is growing, attracting those with broad interests and leaders at every stage of their careers. The board and staff members are outstanding.

Having accomplished what I had set out to do, and more, I asked the board to begin a search for my successor in the fall of 2005. It is my pleasure to announce that this month Ami Brophy has assumed the responsibilities of Executive Director of this extraordinary organization. She most recently served as the Executive Director of the Clio Awards and previously was VP/Publisher of Adweek Magazine. She has degrees in arts and management and began her career in publishing at Copley Newspapers in California, participating in the launch of L.A. Weekly and L.A. Style. I am proud to pass the torch to someone as uniquely qualified as Ami, and wish her and the board every success as ADC enters its 87th year.

It has been a joy to share this long adventure with so many exceptional colleagues and friends. Thank you for everything.

Warm Regards,

Myrna

ADC National Invitationial Portfolio Reviews

Over 100 top design and 100 top advertising students gathered at the ADC Gallery on May 7th and 8th to have their books critiqued by creative professionals. Many thanks to Carla Frank and Matteo Bologna, who chaired the design review, and Wayne Best and Bill Oberlander, who chaired the advertising review. Wayne stayed well after the review was over to view the portfolio of each student who asked him to (nearly 100!). Thanks also to the reviewers who provided their insight and feedback to the students.

Many reviewers told us that this was the most talented group of students yet. For those of you who were unable to attend, we'll have samples and resumes from the participating students on our website within the next few weeks.

Saturday Career Workshops

The month of April featured the last three workshops of the Spring '07 session. This program, which introduces talented high school juniors to careers in visual communications, is part of the ADC's mission to encourage and inspire young people coming into the field.

Bobby Martin gave an inspiring presentation on persuasive posters, showing the students that some of the best design work is done for a good cause. The students' challenge sounded simple: design a poster to make a viewer look up or down. During the critique, they discovered how complicated that could be.

Longtime workshop leaders Alex Suh and Boyoung Lee returned on April 21 to give their Alphabet City workshop. The students roamed around the nieghborhood with polaroid cameras, looking for letterforms in everyday objects. Alex and Boyoung's eye-opening presentation took the students behind the scenes of an elaborate photo shoot.

The final workshop was led by ADC Young Guns Jonathan Jackson and Sarah Nelson of WSDIA. The project was shoe design, a first for the workshops, and the students enjoyed dabbling in fashion. Soon you'll be able to see the students' work on the WSDIA website.

Student work from Bobby Martin presentation Alex Suh and Boyoung Lee workshop

We received some great feedback from participating students:
"It was interesting, fun, expanded my creativity, and introduced me to new and interesting people and projects."

"I really liked all the presenters, mainly because each one had something important and different to teach us."

"There were no limits as to what we were allowed to use."

"I liked being able to see what artistic job opportunities are out there."

"I liked the variety of the workshops. It allows the participants to expand their knowledge of the world of art and design."

"Everything is laid back and lets your creativity grow."

"The people were very nice and are all professional so you can ask them for help if you want."

"I learned a lot through their presentations."

Many thanks to our volunteers who devoted their Saturday mornings to assisting at workshops: Jason Pacheco, Elisa Halperin, Karen Cohn, Lauren Cameron, Adam Jackson, Julie Ferrara, Kristin Youngman, Jon Morgan, William Chung, and Angela Chen. If you'd like to participate this fall, please contact Kate Farina at
kate@adcglobal.org.

Young Guns Live: The Back Story,
"The Woman Vanguard"

On Thursday May 17th, the ADC held the first of its Young Guns Live: The Back Story series, "The Woman Vanguard." The evening's panel included five female ADC Young Guns: Tracy Boychuk, Leanne Shapton, Julie Hirschfeld, Deanne Cheuk, and Stella Bugbee. Moderated by Debbie Millman, they discussed examples of their work, answered audience questions and talked about their experiences working as creative leaders. The success of the evening would not have been possible without the help of ADC YG5 Series Advisors (named above), especially WSDIA (WeShouldDoItAll) and Jennifer Lew for their fantastic work on the series invitation and poster design.

Secret Lives: The Parsons Senior Thesis Exhibition

Parsons The New School for Design presented an exhibition of the best work of its graduating students, with an opening reception on April 24. The opening filled the gallery and the work was well received and highly lauded. In their pieces, students responded to the theme "The Secret Lives of..." and the work ranged from painting, to illustration, to sculpture, to toy design, and lightbox installations. Here are some photos of work by the talented seniors.

ADC Paper Expo

The ADC’s annual Paper Expo, which took place on May 9, was one of the most successful expos to date. It was attended by more than 300 people, with 17 paper and printing companies, including Aldine, Appleton Coated, CTI Paper, Crane, Curious Papers, Domtar, Gmund Paper, Finch Paper, Fox River Paper, Gilbert Paper, Litho-Art, LP Thebault, International Paper, Monadnock, Neenah Paper, New Page, Scheufelen, Stora Enso, and Yupo. From the food and drink to the great companies involved, the Paper Expo was yet another unique ADC event bridging those gaps in the creative community. Our thanks go out to Young Gun Tiziana Haug, who designed the poster which lured in the abundance of attendees, to New Page for providing paper, and to Litho-Art for printing.
