Twice a year ADC, along with the School Art League and New York Board of Education, offers a series of Saturday Career Workshops for 50 talented New York City-area high school juniors. ADC catches up this month with former participant of the Saturday Career Workshop, Angela Chen, a graphic designer that coincidentally also received an ADC Scholarship while she enrolled at Fashion Institute of Technology. Angela talks about past internships, ADC's first Interactive Portfolio Review, and reveals to us why she returns to the Saturday Career Workshop as a volunteer. Interview by Regan Murphy, regan@adcglobal.org.
ADC: How did the Saturday Career Workshop impact you?
AC: Every week of the workshop was something new and exciting. One week we were working in teams coming up with ads. Next week it was painted animals with paper towels and ink. But I got more than just five sessions. The Saturday Career Workshop had a greater impact on me than I ever expected. My career path became a little clearer - I just earned my degree in Graphic Design. My family tree got a little stronger too - I befriended a fellow participant after discovering we were related. And my professional network got a little bigger - I met a few of the presenters again years later.
ADC: What brings you back to each Saturday Career Workshop session as a volunteer?
AC: Since I am no longer eligible to attend as a participant, I've found my way back to the program as a volunteer. I don't participate in the hands-on workshops like the students do, but there's a different sense of involvement this time around. It's inspiring to see students with a passion to learn and explore. I can easily connect with them because I was them - afraid of entering this field, yet curious to know what it was like. I volunteer so that they can, hopefully, get the greatest impact from this program as I did.
ADC: While getting your BFA in Graphic Design at FIT, you interned at HBO, then at Sports Illustrated. What's the best and worst part about being an intern?
AC: Hands down the best part was seeing my work made. At HBO, I had several opportunities to showcase my designs and illustrations at the HBO Shop right in the middle of NYC on 42nd Street. I stayed long enough at Sports Illustrated to see my T-shirt design get produced.
The worst part of being an intern isn't even that bad. Yes, it's a lot of work to keep up an internship and school, but it makes finding that perfect job out of school so much easier. And yes, I could be earning a lot more, but I'll earn even more when I get my full-time job.
ADC: Is there one graphic designer out there who you really admire?
AC: I've been asked this several times, and each time I feel like I should just pick one, but I don't have a favorite designer. Graphic designers aren't illustrators or artists; they shouldn't have an identifying design style. To me, what makes a designer successful is his/her ability to change according to the project. Plus, there are so many graphic designers out there to choose from - you have the long-time established designers consistently making great work, but on the other hand, you have the fresh new-comers that are just as capable.
ADC: You participated in ADC's Interactive Portfolio Review this past May during ADC Portfolio Week - from your perspective, what was it like?
AC: Unbelievable, I never before met so much young talent from around the country in one day! I definitely felt the pressure to stand out from the crowd. I must admit in terms of technology, many of the students were far more advanced than me. However, that just motivates me even more to learn and dive into it faster.
ADC: What are you working on right now?
AC: My latest project is to learn more about web development. That's where I'm heading into now, and I'm only at the tip of the iceberg. Even though I've graduated, the learning doesn't stop there. There's still so much more ahead of me.
ADC: Well, ADC wishes you much success. And now give us your three favorite:
