ADC: Your career is characterized by early and rapid success. How did that lead to founding thehappycorp?
DJ: Agency.com, JWT, TBWAChiatDay, were all great places to spend time, each full of anarchists. Creative people at the top of their game always looking for a way out. People working too many hours, talking about what they would do next if they left. I had my fair share of mentors (account directors, creative directors, clients) all of whom seemed to see something in me, and offering the same advice..."start your own company."
In late 2003, my creative partner and I traded midtown for downtown. I lived in Nolita, in a 1,250 square foot apartment - why not work there? At least it had skylights. Already collaborating on a t-shirt line, we decided to start working together on ideas. These ideas began to take shape and clients began to surface.
ADC: Has your experience as an ADC board member contributed to or altered the way you work? Has it changed you?
DJ: I became a board member of ADC soon after founding thehappycorp. It's difficult to describe how different it feels working on your own after commuting to skyscrapers with infinite numbers of support staff to make sure everything is just right. It was a surprise when the phone rang in the early days of the thehappycorp. I remember calls from Kevin Wassong and Brian Collins (fellow board members), I really wasn't sure what their calls meant or what their contributions would lead to.
ADC had helped me understand talent and systems issues, ownership, relationship building, and the market at large within the business of visual and commercial art. Participating in board meetings with influential seasoned professionals has helped me to become more confident in my ideas, to take more risks, to seek advice, and to take actions that are stimulating for me and for others. I have always wrestled with issues of service and volunteering; I wanted to make the greatest contribution possible with my time. ADC is a great place to give time, expertise and knowledge. My hope is to have an impact on future generations of creatives.
ADC: As ADC's new board President your overarching goal is to expand the role of ADC as a physical and virtual hub for connecting members to each other and the world at large. Can you talk more about that?
DJ: This organization was founded to stimulate the visual communications industry. Over the next 3 years, ADC will become a daily experience for those who trade in their ideas and talents for both the spirit and the sport of it. Personal experiences have taught me that serendipity and opportunity can be accelerated and enhanced by digital means. We are planning a fund-raising effort that will expand our offerings in the digital space. I am a firm believer in the need for meaningful real life contact, and equally believe that technology is an asset in connection.
We will take content being created at the club and release it to a larger audience digitally. We will continue to digitize the ADC archive - more than 88 years of award-winning work - and we will also be making efforts to capture and share thoughts of creative leadership that have been celebrated by the industry.
ADC: What is in store for ADC members?
DJ: ADC started with a bunch of renegade artists banding together to create a new marketplace for their work. The club needs today's renegades to define the visual communications marketplace for the next generation. Agency layoffs are at an all-time high. Design has become more important than ever as sustainability has become a recent focus. Digital media is maturing and becoming a larger part of every brand's personality. This club will serve the community by sharing thinking that will help us redefine ourselves in these changing and challenging times.
Given that software and tools make it easier for everyone to get involved, it has become essential for ideas to shine through. Today traditional media is challenged as new media fragments consumption of information and entertainment. The changes have forced us to create new ways of comparing, evaluating and competing. I am also particularly interested in creating community for the small upstart firms that are getting attention from larger brands. ADC will become an outpost for the next generation of creative enterprise.
ADC: ADC Young Guns was created thirteen years ago and is opening its Call for Entries for YG7 in March. What are your thoughts and hopes about unifying past and present Young Guns?
DJ: We continue to offer lectures and programs that connect generations of ADC Young Guns at the club. We've recently started outreach to partners for new events to connect these generations into a cohesive community as well as to facilitate sharing their current work online. Stay tuned this summer.
Interestingly enough, I have never been recognized as an ADC Young Gun. At 24 I was an associate creative director at JWT, and at 25 I was made partner. By 26 I was a managing partner at TBWAChiatDay. I was on the ADC board before I turned 30. I hadn't been exposed to the ADC Young Guns program, and was more invested in the Annual Awards show. In hindsight, I wish I had entered the ADC Young Guns competition, though I am now ineligible. I am involved in the ADC Young Guns board committee and have been lucky enough to work with Rei Inamoto and Rob Rasmussen to generate greater visibility and awareness to make ADC Young Guns an even more successful program.
ADC: What is going on with LVHRD these days?
DJ: I started LVHRD for a few reasons. My business partner had extensive party promotion experience, the parties that we were attending were not engaging, and felt formulaic. We felt a need to bring creative people from disparate creative professions together. We have now been throwing the events for more that 4 years, and have really enjoyed it. We have two events planned during January and February.
(CLL) PHN LCKN 2 is the sequel to the event we held at the MoMA in late 2006. This time we are partnering with 5th Finger, a mobile company to deliver a unique mobile experience for guests. In February we are putting together our 5th Architecture Duel; our theme will reflect the current economic conditions and will open eyes to a new creative frontier in architecture. As well, for late March, we are planning an Un-Conference that combines work and play featuring those who have achieved balance between their career and personal lives.
ADC: What is your plan for continued success in 2009?
DJ: Oh, you mean 2000-fine? As the president of ADC, I plan to build membership and find more ways for members to get involved with the club. As for thehappycorp I plan to keep the sweat volume high. I plan on taking short naps followed by really tough work sessions. I think we are all trying to redefine ourselves this year.
ADC: Napping is a crucial skill! And now, please give your favorite...
Places you have been: Bali, Hong Kong, Vieques.
Places you want to go: Mars, the moon, outer atmosphere. Concerts you have attended: Les Savy Fav, U2, The Police and Air. Foods to order while working late: Dominos, Pluck U, Thai food. Websites: Newser, Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, a slew of design blogs. Excuses not to do something: Sleep, sleep, sleep. Guilty pleasure TV shows: True Blood, Big Love, Mad Men and, dare I say it? Gossip Girl. It's candy.

Women Of Design
by Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit
The immense body of work produced by graphic designers around the world is astoundingly varied, rich and widely celebrated. Yet in publications, conferences and other public realms, women designers tend to be outnumbered by their male counterparts whose appearances, work and achievements are constantly in the spotlight. Luckily, it's a reversing trend. While this book does not attempt to relieve the imbalance, it does bring full attention to the wonderful work, careers and contributions of women designers, writers, teachers and entrepreneurs around the world.
The women in this book have been divided into three groups, representative of the time in which their influence was most heartily felt: Groundbreakers, Pathfinders and Trailblazers. These three generations have helped shape the modern landscape of design. Explore the work, ideals and ventures that have helped define the last fifty years of the graphic design profession. Learn about the women who helped establish design's relevance, importance and impact - and the ones who carry their tradition into new territory. The authors Bryony Gomez-Palacio and Armin Vit are graphic designers and co-founders of UnderConsideration, a growing network and enterprise dedicated to the progress of the graphic design profession and its practitioners, students and enthusiasts. Published by HOW Books, Women Of Design: Influence and Inspiration from the Original Trailblazers to the New Groundbreakers is available for purchase from Amazon.

Support ADC Scholarships and SCW
Two of the 2008 Scholarship winners coincidentally also attended the ADC Saturday Career Workshop program, when they were in high school. This is what they had to say about their time in the SCW program.
Angela Chen, current FIT student and SCW volunteer: "A Zen master, Suzuki Shunryu, once said, 'In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert there are few.' Volunteering for the ADC Career Workshops makes me realize the value of a novice's perspective, where anything seems possible. Sometimes I get wrapped up for days trying to think of some grand idea. Then I go to one of the sessions and see these young students whipping out concepts one after another. I stay involved with this program because it is inspirational and encourages me to keep my options open." Maegan Gindi, current RIT student: "Honestly, I consider it kind of a starting point for my career in photography. I was very new to the visual art world, particularly photography, and it gave me hope that I could have a future in art. The term 'starving artist' is heard all too often, and the Career Workshops brought in visiting, working artists. They let us know that we didn't have to suffer to do the things we loved. There are so many possible career paths that can be created with regards to art. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see that a future and a career could come from something that seemed like it could just be a hobby." Support both of these inspiring programs today! Donate to the scholarship fund or sign up to volunteer for the Saturday Career Workshops by emailing Isabel Johnson at isabel@adcglobal.org.

ADC Young Gun Chris Rubino at Heist Gallery
Heist Gallery is pleased to present the work of Chris Rubino, a versatile artist who has created a vast array of imagery through illustration, printing, graphics and photography. The simplicity and flattened forms that dominate his visuals capture pieces of our daily language in minimal forms. For his solo exhibition at Heist titled Make Believe Maple Leaves Rubino incorporates the written word into a complex world of iconic lexicon, drawing from process-oriented sketchbook drawings created over the course of one year. Rubino infuses his creations with color using pastel, paint, colored pencil and printmaking. Exuding a faster yet less mechanized energy, this body of work mirrors the way we process imagery and information today. The opening reception is on January 17, 7-9 PM. The exhibition will be on view from January 18 through February 8. Heist Gallery is located at 27 Essex Street in NYC.

Creatives Frank Anselmo and Leo Zanis team up with Breath Editing and Radiohead to create homeless PSA
A commercial written by Frank Anselmo (Creative Director/Writer) & Leo Zanis (Director/Writer) was recently pitched to several homeless organizations. Anselmo finally sold the idea to The National Coalition For The Homeless. The band Radiohead was approached and asked if one of their tracks, which the creative team took a liking to, could be used in the commercial. The spot made it through all the channels until finally getting in front of the band. Directly after viewing the spot, a band who had never sold their music for any commercials instantly gave clearance to use their music for free, claiming they dug both the cause and concept. Radiohead is no stranger to generosity - having released their last album Rainbows on the internet for free. This same spirit was carried on by the commercial's creative team who produced & donated the piece. The commercial, which features an attractive woman, who in reverse makes her way down a grimy city street before shockingly ending up inside a cardboard box, is set to hit TV airwaves soon. To watch and/or download the spot go here. username: homeless password: homeless Creative Pitch Goes National
Creative Pitch is an initiative of BFriend, Inc. and was created by Brainforest, Inc., a Chicago creative agency. It relies on the generous support of volunteers and firms in the advertising and design community. Since its inception in January 2006, Creative Pitch has provided free, high-quality art materials to over 70 Chicago area art programs and served over 50,000 of our neediest elementary school students. Because of the overwhelming success of their program and the great need, they have made the decision to expand the program to a national level. The first step will be the development of a new, national web site and they need your help. For more information go here.
