Now in its second year, ADC Design Sphere honors a comprehensive and sustained program of design, by a single design firm for a client. For the first time ADC honored both the winning design firm and the client. This year's ADC Design Sphere went to Pentagram Design, New York, for their work for the Public Theater, presented at the Annual Awards Gala on April 30, 2009 at ADC Gallery in New York City. Over the years Paula Scher, partner at Pentagram Design, has constructed a visual vocabulary for the Public that is both diverse and coherent - like the theater's programming. Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theater, and Paula reflect upon the relationship, their favorite campaign posters, and what's coming up for the summer.
Interview by Regan Murphy.
ADC: How did your relationship with the Public begin?
PS: In 1994, I was hired by George Wolfe, who was then the Producer of the Public Theater, to design a promotional campaign (posters, mailers, billboards etc.) for the 1994 Shakespeare Festival in Central Park. It was a rush job. When the job was completed George had decided that we worked well together and then hired me to design an identity for the Public Theater as well as all of the posters and a system for all of their promotional materials.
ADC: The ADC Design Sphere category celebrates successful creative work born out of a long range relationship between a client and their design firm. What has been the most advantageous facet of working with Pentagram Oskar?
OE: Paula Scher is an extraordinary artist, and by working with her over almost two decades the Public has been able to create a visual identity that is as vibrant, brash, and flexible as the theater itself. Because our working relationship with Paula is so close, we are able to constantly bounce ideas and projects off each other and create new designs and looks without fear that we are diluting the fundamental consistency of identity of the Public Theater.
ADC: Applications of your design Paula have ranged from signage to mailers, from tickets to billboards, logos to stationery, and beyond for the Public. Is there one particular piece or series that you are most proud of?
PS: There are three designs of the Public's overall identity (two of them were refreshes), plus the campaign posters for "Bring in the Noise, Bring in the Funk." I am proudest of my first season (1994-1995), The "Noise/Funk" campaign, and my refresh of the identity and graphics last year. There are individual posters that I like a lot from other periods, but mostly, I am really pleased that I had the completely unique opportunity to evolve and revise an identity over 15 years with two different Producers/Artistic Directors (currently Oskar) and many different Marketing Directors. I love the Public Theater and I would be thrilled to work for them for another 15 years.
ADC: Having joined the Public in 2005 Oskar, you brought a longstanding reputation for innovation as well as reinventing while honoring the classics. How has your experience informed your input towards the collaboration with Pentagram in terms of branding and communications?
OE: Working with Paula is a lot like working with the great playwrights with whom I have been lucky enough to be partnered. Paula has fantastic first impulses, which are usually correct; when they aren't, it's never my job to tell her what the design should be, only to explain what the project is and let her translate it into design terms.
ADC: The Public Theater has won 40 Tony Awards, 141 Obies, 39 Drama Desk Awards and 4 Pulitzer Prizes, among many others. What is it like to break into a new category?
OE: We are deeply honored at the Public to have received a Design Sphere from the ADC. It's wonderful to have the relationship we have established with Pentagram be recognized; it's a vital relationship for us, and one that bridges our core artistic effort with our desire to market ourselves to the public. You don't do the work to get awards, but its an awfully good feeling to know that the work is recognized.
ADC: The Public Theater recently announced the renovation of its building on Lafayette Street, for which Paula will be designing the environmental graphics. What about this project are you looking forward to?
PS: The Public really needs this lobby redesign. I'm glad that the graphics will be incorporated in a very permanent way, with more expensive materials, etc. Everybody seems to recognize that the graphics are an integral part of the spirit of the Public.
ADC: Which is your favorite poster that Paula has designed?
OE: Paula's image for the 2008 Summer Season in the Park (HAMLET and HAIR) was absolutely perfect from the moment she showed it to me. It's striking, playful, and deep. It's also incredibly popular among our staff, who wear any piece of clothing they can find with the distinctive Mohawk Skull on it. It's brilliant.
ADC: And what's coming up this summer?
PS: This summer's festival consists of the usual two unrelated plays, "Twelfth Night," by William Shakespeare and "The Bacchae" by Euripedes. The only thing these two plays have in common is a little debauchery (a lot of it in the case of "The Bacchae") and the fact that women dress up like men and men like women. We united the plays under the banner of "Cross-Dressing in Central Park." The campaign will launch in late May.
OE: This summer we are also doing our first Greek tragedy in the Delacorte, with a ravishing score by Philip Glass. I can't wait to hear and see it.

A New York-based art director, a recent Pratt Institute graduate, a graphic designer from Pennsylvania, and a Milan-based international member are the selected members that we choose to spotlight this month.
Only ADC Members may post portfolio on adcglobal.org. Take advantage and post your portfolio today by logging in. May's question: Which ADC Young Gun do you admire the most, if you had to select just one?
Fernando Horcasitas, Professional Member
Art Director, New York City "I admire Max Kaplun because I identify with him. He seems to be driven by simplicity, minimalism and negative space which is the style that I find most appealing. Also his use of typography and color are very neat and effective." See Fernando's portfolio here.
Mike Carsten, Student Member
Recent Pratt Institute Graduate, Middle Village, NY "Having only met a handful of ADC Young Guns, one I admire most is Andre Andreev. A teacher of mine (the "meaner" one of the two) who motivated me to do things differently. Class with Andre (and Dan Covert) enhanced my design thinking and skills." See Mike's portfolio here.
Mitzie Testani, Professional Member
Graphic and Interactive Designer ,Conshohocken, PA "I choose Brian Gossett. He is amazingly well-rounded. He has such energy and sense of fun to his work, which also has a really nice tactile quality. He does everything from interactive and type to print and illustration." See Mitzie's portfolio here.
Angela D'Amelio, International Member
Graphic Designer, Milan, Italy "I choose Frank Anselmo for his ability to take on the roles of copywriting, art direction and production supervisory in such diversified situations, from traditional graphics, to guerrilla marketing and ambient media. In addition, all his work demonstrates his capacity to be innovative but still maintain a strong focus on assignments." See Angela's portfolio here.

Drawing is Thinking
by Milton Glaser
For more than fifty years Milton Glaser has designed much of the world we experience every day. His posters, books, albums, restaurants, advertisements, and so much more have made him the preeminent force in design in America. Drawing upon an amazing vocabulary of images and techniques, Glaser has now created his most personal book.
Based on his view that all art has its origin in the impulse to create--primarily through drawing--he has designed a book that powerfully delineates this idea. In Drawing is Thinking, the drawings depicted are meant to be experienced sequentially, so that the viewer not only follows Glaser through these pages, but comes to inhabit his mind. The drawings represent a range of subject matter taken from throughout Glaser's career. They illustrate the author's commitment to the fundamental idea that drawing is not simply a way to represent reality, but a way to understand and experience the world. Glaser's two signature books, Graphic Design and Art is Work, both published by Overlook, are still in print decades after their first appearance. Each displays his work with short descriptions of how the work came about. But in Drawing is Thinking, published in November 2008, Glaser is less interested in display and more concerned with how the mind works to visually represent reality.
