Left to right: Ivan Chermayeff, Tom Geismar and Sagi Haviv
A prolific designer, illustrator, and artist, Ivan has created memorable, iconic images for literally hundreds of clients. As a founding partner of the powerhouse graphic design firm Chermayeff & Geismar with Tom Geismar, he has played a significant role in establishing the firm’s worldwide reputation. His trademarks, posters, publications and art installations for contemporary buildings are widely recognized and have received nearly every award bestowed by the profession. He received the Yale Arts Medal, the President’s Fellow Award from the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Industrial Art Medal from the American Institute of Architects. A past president of the AIGA and elected to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, he also served for two decades as a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art. Ivan is a living legend, a friend of the industry, and a longtime member and friend of ADC. We caught up with Ivan at the end of the summer and learned about what they have cooking over at Chermayeff & Geismar. Interview by Regan Murphy, regan@adcglobal.org.
ADC: Tell us about your relationship with ADC?
IC: Over the years I’ve always had a lot respect for the Art Directors Club. I’ve had good friends that have been very involved with the club, including Henry Wolf, a past President of ADC. I’ve been on your jury a number of times. I remember when ADC was located on Park Ave. Your new space now is very nice. When I was the President of AIGA there was lots of mutual admiration.

Mobil Oil Corporation, 1964
ADC: Your firm has evolved over the years, operating under various versions of the Chermayeff & Geismar name. How has it been to transition to a smaller firm model?
IC: Ten times better. We do what we want to do. We turn out work instead of hustling around to meetings. We spend more time designing and less time in meetings.
ADC: What does the future look like?
IC: We are well known and we are well established around the world. I have no intention of retiring and neither does Tom. Sagi Haviv has been with us for five years and is now a principal partner. He is really great, and may stay on after Tom and I are gone. Work is coming from all over so we’re looking to the future and not slowing down.

Chase Bank, 1961
ADC: Any publications in the near future?
IC: We are probably going to publish an up to date version of TM, which came out in 2000. We will have 10 years of identity work from all over the world to showcase. Instead of making the book longer we’ll take out and add in.

Armani Exchange, 2008
ADC: What recent work are you particularly proud of?
IC: Two great identities we recently completed are for the Library of Congress and the fashion brand Armani Exchange. The new logo for the Library of Congress takes the form of a waving American flag, a design that only the National Library can claim. For Armani Exchange we revised the famous A|X logo and made it into a bold icon without any loss of brand equity. The revised A|X logo can now take a front seat in their advertising, which can currently be seen in magazine ads, billboards and phone booths worldwide.

Windowsill at the office
ADC: Many years ago you claimed that you have a “pack rat” personality. Is that still true?
IC: You know, I can’t help it. I love toys, and primitive things, and things done by do it yourself designers… the list goes on. There is more life in an item, and it is more honest, if it is primitive.

PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), 1984
ADC: What have you been doing lately?
IC: It was a good summer. I was in Italy, England, Japan and Korea. That was quite enough! I took a little time to go up to Cape Cod with my wife on holiday in August. But now there is plenty going on.

Smithsonian Institution, 1999
ADC: What shall we look forward to?
IC: There are many exciting projects in the pipeline, some of which we cannot talk about yet. The others include new identities for the MacArthur Foundation, Conservation International, and a new worldwide environmental campaign that will have a lot of advertising and celebrities attached to it. We are also currently working on big projects in Korea, India, Turkey and Dubai.
ADC: You have kept up associations with schools here in New York. Doing any teaching this year?
IC: Tom, Sagi and I are preparing to teach a course at SVA this Spring. Being a small office our time is some what limited but it is very important to stay connected.

The Graphic Eye: Photographs by Graphic Designers from around the Globe
by Stefan G. Bucher

Selected from the personal photography portfolios of some of the world\'s most innovative graphic designers including big international names such as Ed Fella, Jeri Heiden, and Marian Bantjes the images in The Graphic Eye offer a glimpse into the working methods and obsessions of this unique class of visual creatives. Detail-oriented and aesthetically demanding, graphic designers have a special way of looking at the world, and the photographic images they create for their own reference and enjoyment from micro details to monumental cityscapes, funny vignettes to found fashion are as unconventional as they are inspirational.

In his latest book graphic designer and art director Stefan G. Bucher, a member of the class of ADC Young Guns 4, collects 500 photographs by 120 graphic designers in one very impressive volume. Bucher selected the photographs from thousands of submissions and places them in an evocative sequence. Congrats to Stefan!
