ADC Q&A:
MASASHI KAWAMURA
Masashi Kawamura is a senior Art Director and Writer at BBH New York. He studied programming and design at Masahiko Sato Laboratory in Tokyo and went on to work for advertising agencies such as Hakuhodo, BBH Japan, and 180 Amsterdam. Outside of advertising, Masashi continues to explore design in different mediums, directing music videos, developing apps and products, among other endeavors. His recent production of SOUR's Hibi no Neiro (Tone of Everyday Life) music video has just won a Gold Cube from the Art Directors Club.

ADC: Congratulaions Masashi! The ADC is very selective as far as award shows go, but you've now won quite a few Cubes from us. What's your secret?
MK: First of all, I totally agree that NY ADC award is one of the most selective and pure design awards in the world, and to receive them has always been a great honor for me. I don't think there's any secret formula in how to be chosen... but I always intend for my work to have a simple universal idea and aesthetic, which may be one reason for it to be recognized in this international award show.

ADC: Your winning piece this year is a music video for SOUR, and like many of your other projects (Rainbow in Your Hand, Pythagora Switch) it's deceptively simple. Is that something you strive for stylistically?
MK: Yes. I believe that the best ideas are always simple and universal, and that's what I aim for. Even when it uses a new technology, the output and its experience has to be simple, relatable, and in amazing quality in order to reach the people's hearts.

ADC: We were all impressed by how well this production was coordinated and edited. How did you get all these people and videos to sync up as well as they did?
MK: The 4 directors (Hal Kirkland, Magico Nakamura, Masayoshi Nakamura, and I) thought really hard on how to coordinate every scene. We wanted the video to look as real and organic as possible, trying to avoid editing the timings as much as we can. So what we did was to shoot a prototype of the entire video using ourselves as the cast, and figured out the perfect timings for each and every scene. We sent that video out to the actual casts to practice and to use as a guide when they are being filmed through their webcams. This way, we were able to sync up the choreography, and still maintain the natural quality of the acting, which adds the charming amateurish feel to the film. It was a painstaking process, but something that we needed to go through in order to get the look that we intended.

ADC: Talk to me about playing with new (or old) mediums. What's the attraction?
MK: I do like to keep myself acquainted with the newest technology and such, but I feel the most important thing is to understand the literacy of each medium, whether it's new or old, and choosing the right ones to best execute the idea. People tend to have the urge to grab onto the latest 'coolest' mediums, but what I enjoy to do is to use a medium that has become a norm, but to use it in a different way.

ADC: Do you have any upcoming work you're excited about? Where do you go from here?
MK: We (Hal Kirkland, my creative partner & I) just finished making a website for the hip hop artist Asher Roth. We built a website where the home page is constantly updated by Asher and his fans' photos. Whenever they take a photo with the 'Asher Roth website card' and uploads, not only it becomes the top page, but all the interface starts to fly out of the card. We used the Augmented Reality technology in a different way, allowing fans to actively participate with the website. The site is launching on May 3rd, so please go and have a play with it. www.asherrothmusic.com

I don't want to lock myself into just doing film or websites. As I've been doing before, I'd like to keep on exploring other mediums that I haven't yet played with. Also, I enjoy myself as a creative within an agency, as well as doing these kinds of self initiated projects. Hopefully I can maintain the happy healthy balance of doing both.
