ADC Q&A:
OLAF VELTMAN |
The Art Directors Club's 89th Annual Awards Call for Entries poster features the work of Dutch globe trotting advertising photographer Olaf Veltman. After Veltman came on board for the project, he and the "dream team" produced three versions of the poster, all with a ominous and inspiring theme: working late while the rest of the city sleeps can get you the gold cube. Veltman shares what he would be doing if he was not behind the lens, the top three places in the world he wants to visit, and his favorite websites. | |
| ADC: Did you study photography in school? AT: I did not finish my photography course, I learned most by assisting various photographers. ADC: When growing up what did you want to be? AT: A brain surgeon. ADC: Do you shoot film? OV: Love to, I still use it occasionally for personal work. ADC: Tell me a bit about the process of shooting the three location shots for the ADC campaign for the 89th Annual Awards Call for Entries? OV: I shot those with a wonderful team, and being that there was a very limited budget - we had to improvise. Both Michael Ash and myself put in money and Jake Mills and Lisa Maria Cabrera took care of production and the necessary permits. The creatives were all helping out, we had a great time together. Saddington in London did the post for nothing. It was a dream team with the right spirit. ADC: What was the harshest conditions you have worked in? OV: Barrow Alaska in November, I was shooting a polar bear hiding next to a Land Rover. |

ADC: If right now you were not a professional photographer what could you see yourself doing? OV: Water prospecting in Africa. ADC: What is coming up for you? OV: Shooting some car ads for a Brazilian agency. ADC: Sounds nice and warm. How did you ring in the new year? OV: Did fireworks with my kids and started the year with reading "e" by Matt Beaumont, brilliant book. Now your three favorite Places you have been: Madagascar, Australia, Italy. Places you want to go: Bhutan, Mongolia, Antartica. Museums: Tate Modern, the Hirshhorn, the British Museum. Foods: everything Asian, everything Italian, organic food. Websites: Google Maps, Panoramio and Luminious Landscape. View Olaf Veltman's portfolio here. ADC 89th Annual Awards Call for Entries Poster Design by: Publicis |

New youth mentoring initiative
Design Ignites Change, Adobe Youth Voices and the Designers Accord have announced an exciting youth mentoring initiative, School: by Design, that asks high school students, in collaboration with professional or college design mentors, to "redesign your school." For School: by Design, mentoring teams will examine the school "ecosystem" from the student's vantage point to re-imagine a more sustainable school, one that will improve now and continue to grow and thrive in the future. The project will connect students to a subject they know well, and one on which they probably have strong opinions. At the end of 2010, all submitted projects will be eligible to receive an award to fund the implementation of their project within their school. Learn more here. |

GEORGE LOIS: THE ESQUIRE COVERS @ MoMA This new book is a rare glimpse into the culture of the 60's as seen through the Iconic ESQUIRE covers created by George Lois and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in April 2007 where they remain in the permanent collection. More than any one body of work, these covers define a decade with their no-holds-barred graphics and their prescient statements of those turbulent times. Lois, a friend of the Art Directors Club and an ADC Hall of Famer, is one of the most influential admen of his generation and a cultural provocateur. This sure-fire collector's item contains digitally reproduced and remastered copies of ESQUIRE covers in their original size, including three fold-outs. Get it here. Publishers Prosper and Martine Assouline invite ADC Members to meet Lois and celebrate the launch of this new book on Thursday, March 11 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Plaza's lobby mezzanine (59th Street and Fifth Avenue).
