Q&A WITH JOHN HOCKENBERRY
HALL OF FAME MC
Last Thursday, a who's who of the creative community gathered at the Art Directors Club to honor our newest Hall of Fame laureates. We were privileged to once again have John Hockenberry as master of ceremonies for this celebration. John is an award winning journalist and host of national morning news program, The Takeaway. He has earned four Emmy Awards, three Peabody Awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award and a Casey Medal. We sat down with John to hear his thoughts on this year's inductees and the future role of creatives.

ADC: Your work covers an incredible range, what draws you to visual communications and the Art Directors Club?
JH: The backstory for so much of America's economic success is the work of creative people making the language and the visuals and making the experiential dazzle of the rollouts and introductions of things that constitute business. And make them memorable. And I think that you cannot overstress the importance of creatives in delivering the meaning and the excitement of what would otherwise be a kind of Darwinian evolution. It's the creatives who make these huge leaps and jumps and allow us to go from one stage to another, and allow us to imagine things when business people might have a little difficulty getting us to make those sorts of leaps.

ADC: Do you see any of those kind of creatives in this year's laureates?
JH: Oh absolutely, and with me the strongest connection is with George Nelson of Herman Miller. Their understanding that the workplace of today and of the future is not about these legacy, neo-classical, permanent structures, but this portable, almost medieval tent-space where the puppeteer puts everything together in an hour, does brilliant creative work and then moves on to the next assignment, the next thing, the next place, the next village. That's the work place of today, and Herman Miller understood that possibly ahead of everyone else.

ADC: Do you have any stand-out memories from hosting the Hall of Fame in 2008?
JH: I remember a really young ad agency's CEO, one of the last laureates up there...

ADC: Alex Bogusky
JH: His reputation was so danger-boy, being out there on the edge, taking risks no one else would take. And he just was so completely sweetly vulnerable in that moment. With all his people around him. And it was such a revealing moment to me of how brave you have to be to be in this business, but also how vulnerable you have to be to make a difference.

George Nelson

ADC: As ADC approaches it's 90th year, what role do you see creatives playing in the world of tomorrow? What kind of person is our future Hall of Famer?
JH: I think things are getting more integrated. And we've gone through this in the journalism business for 10-15 years now already, where everybody wants a piece of this action. Everybody wants to be a reporter, everybody wants to be an art director. My kids are running around making movies and designing fashions, and making video games and learning algebra. And so I see the distinctness of the field merging with all fields. And I think the future of this creative world will be people who can be fluent in all aspects of the creation of content and media surrounding the objects we will use in the next hundred years.

I think that in many ways Apple demonstrates part of that integration. Where the designers are the engineers are the positioners. You look at the iPad ad campaign and it's not simply a revolutionary statement about a gadget. It's a revolutionary statement about the future itself. You see yourself through the eyes of those people who are sitting there with those iPads on their laps, and by seeing yourself in this kind of future involving these tablet objects that represent all of media boiled down to a rectangle of sophisticated technology - that's where we're headed. It will be somebody whose head you never see whose got an iPad on their lap or something like it musing and putting it all together who will be the future Hall of Famer.

ADC CORPORATE MEMBERS:
KIT HINRICHS AND SAPPI PAPER
Each month we ask a corporate member of the Art Directors Club to share some industry news with the greater ADC community. This month, Sappi paper had us sit down with their long-time collaborator, Kit Hinrichs, to talk about print production and education. Kit and Sappi have just finished The Standard 4: Scoring and Folding, an invaluable resource for designers and printers. Check out the wonderful intro video here.

ADC: Why did you and Sappi put so much effort into an educational resource?
KH: Well obviously the last 10 years has been such a transition in the communications world - so many things are going digital. And at the same time we genuinely feel there is an opportunity for print to be part of the communications package. What we've been trying to do together in the last three or four years in doing the standards series was to give designers and printers the understanding that there are things you can do with print that you cannot do with any other medium.

ADC: So in your mind, what is the core advantage of print?
KH: I think the thing that print has is scale - that aspect of something that unfolds or becomes larger. And the texture of something, the smell, the feel of the paper. So it's a very sensual medium. And in many ways you have more control over the way in which you want to deliver the message. And I think that's also one of those interesting things about stories and about print. Is that you can tell the story, in my opinion, in a much more effective way.

ADC: At both of our Paper Expos this year we've noticed a focus on environmental issues. How can designers reduce their carbon footprint?
KH: Well I think one of the things that's been coming up, is 'how can we be most effective in our sustainability in the use of paper.' So I think that's something where there's an educational aspect that's not been fully realized, but certainly is on everyone's radar. And the thing I find about print is that you retain that piece, that information, and you refer to it on a continual basis. By doing things effectively in their design, you keep it, you refer to it, it's a resource for you that is much more than just a single piece that you use once and throw away. And in comparison with the digital world... the digital world isn't free or without unsustainable aspects. You've got the electricity that is used to do those server farms which is just vast.

KEVIN O'CALLAGHAN: MONUMENTAL
Thursday, November 18

Please join us for a conversation between Steven Heller and Kevin O'Callaghan at the SVA Theatre, with a reception, book signing and other surprises to follow.

Kevin O'Callaghan is a design wizard and Monumental is his manifesto, featuring hundreds of beautiful and useful design objects made out of obsolete, useless, cast-off technology. Since 1985, O'Callaghan has taught a now-legendary 3-D design class at New York's School of Visual Arts, where students solder, rivet, and weld the flotsam of mass-produced consumer culture into new, different, and, most importantly, functional objects. For "Yugo Next," an exhibition that toured the United States--and mesmerized the media wherever it went--students transformed so-called "useless" Yugo automobiles into a piano, a barbecue, a shower, a confessional, an accordion, a gigantic telephone, and a toaster that actually popped, among other things. O'Callaghan is a philosopher, comedian, entrepreneur, and social critic who shows how design can make the world a better place.

MARIAN BANTJES
I Wonder

I Wonder from Marian Bantjes, illustration chair of ADC's 90th Annual Awards, is both uniquely beautiful and refreshingly different.

Departing from the design-book norm, Bantjes has opted to forgo rehashing her already impressive catalogue, and has created something entirely new. Every single illustration in I Wonder was created specifically for the book over 15 months of writing, designing and typesetting. The result is uniquely forward looking - neither a retrospective, nor best-of, I Wonder is a masterpiece unto itself.

Portions of the book harken to medieval christian manuscripts, others are covered in hand-drawn flourishes and one squint-inducing section is written entirely in pictorial code. A delightfully hilarious interlude critiques the design of the roman alphabet ("I simply can't imagine what they were thinking").

Do yourself a favor, pick up a copy.
