SCOTT DADICH & GAEL TOWEY
THE FUTURE OF DESIGN IN MEDIA
|
|
|
|
|
Abstract Conference, an exploration of editorial design's new relationship with technology and media, kicks off June 10th. In preparation, ADC sat down with two creatives at the forefront of change: Scott Dadich, Executive Director, Editorial Development for Conde Nast, and Gael Towey, Chief Creative and Editorial Director for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Full interview here.

ADC: Tell us about Abstract Conference
SD: There's never been a day dedicated to great editorial communication and design. [About two years ago] we started talking about this idea of doing something about it. Then of course the world imploded ecomonically and we found ourselves on the other side of an iPad, and things really started to click into place. We were in a position to influence the conversation about design, about publishing, about media.
We all gathered and decided it was time to put on a conference and really address some of the changes that our industry has been going through. I think this is different from most conferences. We're thinking of it very much like a symposium style day, where there's a good back and forth between the audience and ourselves, and we really want to get as much out of it as we hope our attendees get.
ADC: What's your design process like now?
GT: Because we're a how-to brand, we're finding this addition of more tools to tell the story even more exciting. It gets the designer really into the center of the conversation.
SD: There has been this criticism of what the publishing industry is doing, saying "well it's just a replica, they're just stuffing the magazine onto the iPad" and it's really not the case. We are actually thinking about what is the appropriate engagement, what is the appropriate way to tell a story? When it ceases to become a technology conversation and the advent of a real creative conversation occurs, that's really where it gets exciting. I think that's the point of this conference: great design is technology agnostic, it's device agnostic. Great design is great design, and that's fundamentally centers on communicating.

ADC: What's the designer's role in getting people to pay for content?
SD: You know what, I'm big on preaching about number one: discoverability; but also the sort of training that needs to go into the conversation with our reader. If you think about 2004 and you think about the literally hundreds of millions of dollars that Apple spent on educating people that iPods were meant for music... That was a huge reeducation process. We're not even a year into iPad. So I don't think there's an understanding yet from the consumer standpoint that this device is ideally suited to reading magazines and consuming media content.
ADC: How did you react to the iPad so quickly?
GT: You know I have to give Scott credit for that completely. He showed us what he was working on on his iPhone and I was so excited by it, because I've never liked how our brands look on the web. It's such an information based research tool, as opposed to an experience tool, and this felt like an amazing experience. So I asked him if he would come in and show it to Martha and she got so excited about it.
ADC: Do either of you have advice for student editorial designers?
GT: Take a motion graphics course.
SD: Yeah! [laughs] I'm not even considering resumes of folks that don't have multimedia experience.

ADC CORPORATE MEMBER
DeviantART

|
|
|
Each month we ask a corporate member of the Art Directors Club to share some industry news with the greater ADC community. This month, DeviantART had us sit down with Creative Director, Ryan Ford, to talk about niche creative communities.
|
| |
| |
ADC: Why should professional creatives pay attention to deviantART?
RF: As creative professionals, we have a duty to stay in touch with current trends, styles, and ideas being shared on the Internet as it relates to our industry. It is important to keep tabs on what's happening on open networks like deviantART to ensure contemporary work actually looks, well, contemporary, and not like what everybody else is doing. Additionally, sites like ours serve as a fantastic resource for new talent, where professionals can source up-and-coming talent to support their teams and projects.
ADC: What trends are you seeing in creative submissions?
RF: Of lately, I've noticed a huge community growing around textures, fonts, and general resources. We've always sort of had it, but it's never been as big as it is now. DeviantART has become a prime resource for all creative professionals, in that we have a massive collection of really high-quality resources for use in their work, which includes the mentioned textures and fonts, but also includes 3D models, character illustration bases, and even tutorials teaching new methods of creating.

ADC: Though instant, is the community-critique approach to artistic development problematic because of anonymity, authority and distance?
RF: Each artist has to determine for themselves the quality of a critique based on the feedback from the critic. You don't need a (profile) picture or a real name to define whether you find value in the critique. You find value in the critique if it is thoughtfully presented, and there is growth that springs from the musings. So, really, anonymity and distance amount to very little when it comes down to it.
What matters is people's willingness to help others grow. What we have on deviantART is a massive community of people sharing differing levels of expertise, but also a genuine desire to impart wisdom gained from experience, however minor that feedback may be. It's better to receive small nuggets of wisdom and feedback from 10 people than to wait around for an "expert" to examine your work so they can provide you with their glorious insights.
