DESIGNISM: BURMA
JWT & Human Rights Watch on Political Prisoners

ADC's Designism award explores the responsibilities of creatives to drive social and political change through their work. This year, a creative team at JWT drew attention to their creative counterparts in Burma who are imprisoned for their art and expression. Working with Human Rights Watch, JWT installed a model prison in Grand Central Station with bars made out of pens for passersby to remove and sign a petition with. The following interview with Andy Clarke, executive creative director of JWT, would no doubt result in his imprisonment if he lived in Burma. Check out the full interview on our blog.

ADC: Give us some background on the situation in Burma
AC: The basic problem is that there are people like you and I - they're not political people, they're not criminals, they're just everyday people - who are imprisioned for voicing their basic human rights on the repression in Burma. These people range from journalists, artists, students, comedians, doctors, pretty much anybody that should be allowed to talk freely but aren't allowed to

ADC: How did your team approach the problem?
AC: The problem was there already - the campaign, 2100 Prisoners for 2010, was already a line that Human Rights Watch had thought of, so really the job was to try to bring as much attention to it as possible. The first thing they knew they had to do was approach it in a very simple way to attract as many people as possible. That's how they came about the idea of an installation of some kind. It's good because it was financially controllable and allowed us to put it in a place where we get a lot of traffic: Grand Central Station.
  Andrew Clarke

ADC: How does it feel to win an award for such a worthy cause?
AC: The award is fantastic, but the cause is needless to say the most important thing. If art can be recognized to help a cause and to make a difference then I think that's perfect. It is one of the very few businesses in the world that can actually use its creativity to make a difference.

There are people locked away in Burma that do what I do, and what you do. A creative writer in this very minute is sitting in a cell in Burma and can't do anything. The fact that you can write about this because you're a creative writer or involved in the creative industry and that we can actually do something for them... it almost feels like we're doing it together with them in a strange way.

ADC: Where should people go for more info on this issue?
AC: Human Rights Watch: hrw.org

ADC CORPORATE MEMBER
Leo Burnett

Each month we ask a corporate member of the Art Directors Club to share some industry news with the greater ADC community. This month, Leo Burnett had us sit down with David Perez, to talk about their sponsorship of the 2011 National Student Portfolio Reviews. Check out the full interview on our blog.

ADC: Leo Burnett has been making some great educational commitments, why do you think it's important to invest in students
DP: On top of wanting to identify amazing junior talent we think that it's important for agencies, especially top-tier agencies, to make sure that we are investing in talent in general. We have to make sure that we are providing the physical and psychic space for great ideas to flourish. And regardless of where kids go, we think it's our responsibility and our duty to support the kids who quite frankly will be the future of our industry. Leo Burnett is an organization in service of the industry, it's not just in service to itself.

ADC: That led you to ADC?
DP: Yes, the last two years we've had the pleasure of attending the National Student Portfolio Review. On top of being able to catch a bunch of really amazing kids right at the beginning of their careers, you also get a sense of how we're teaching kids in this industry and who's evolving the fastest and who isn't.

The ADC National Student Portfolio Review

Leo Burnett also won several awards this year, including a Silver Cube for the All State Mayhem campaign   ADC: What do you look for in new talent?
For junior books there's a few of them: Craft - obviously they need to be great at what they do. Art Directors have to have an exquisite design sense, and their book has to have incredible polish. The other thing is content: I need my kids to know what's going on in the industry at this moment. I tell them that their jobs are to learn from our past, observe our present and dictate our future. And then the third thing is a palpable passion for what you do, and I actually think it's the most important thing. I often tell kids, if you don't give a shit about what's in your book, I'm not going to give a shit about it either.

It's important that people have a ferocious curiosity in culture and want to translate that into advertising. And if the kids don't have that, I feel like they don't have that creative thought that keeps them motivated. Because if you're not interested, you will burn out. This industry is famous for burning people out.
