GEOFF GREEN
YOUNG GUN & JURY PHOTOGRAPHER

Geoff Green is a winner of ADC Young Guns 4 and photographed this year's Annual Awards jury. Geoff's work has a documentary style with a focus on people and how they relate to their surroundings. His ability to capture a singular moment and communicate the essence of a scene is one of his greatest strengths. We sat down with Geoff to talk about his work and experience in photography.

ADC: What was it like just starting out and getting to work under Jay Maisel, one of our Hall of Famers?
GG: Jay is an amazing person and I was extremely lucky to be able to work for and learn from him for nearly five years. He and his wife L.A. liked to say it was my graduate degree in the art and business of photography. Which is absolutely true, I had no concept of the commercial side of photography. Not to be too self deprecating, but I had no idea who Jay was and I didn't know a strobe pack from a lightstand. I did know I wanted to work in photography.

ADC: What's the most important skill you've learned in the last five years?
GG: Patience... although I am still honing this skill. From building client relationships to creating, executing, and completing a body of work, these things take time. Sometimes I wish it all happened a bit more rapidly.

ADC: What would you say to graduating student photographers this spring?
GG: Work hard, connect with whoever your audience is, however you can, keep reaching out to new people, be social. These are the difficult things I struggle with. The creative and creating aspect of the job should be the fun part, though not necessarily easy.

ADC: Complete the sentence: In the future, photography will...
GG: ...be just as difficult, if not more challenging than it has always been.

New technologies may make the act of recording the image easier, but coming up with a unique viewpoint, interesting subject matter, and a compelling way to bring the work to an audience is still the challenge. Thankfully.

ADC CORPORATE MEMBER
SCOTT CARSON

Each month we ask a corporate member of the Art Directors Club to share some industry news with the greater ADC community. This month, Noble Desktop had us sit down with Founder, Scott Carson, to talk about the crossovers between design and technology.

ADC: Give me a 30-second intro to Noble Desktop.
SC: Noble Desktop is a computer graphics training center in Soho. We teach graphic designers, corporations, and career changers how to use Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Photoshop and other graphics programs. Our basic mission: learn cool stuff, do cool stuff, then teach it to others.

ADC: There's sometimes a backlash against technology, a fear that computer skills are emphasized at the expense of design ability. What's your opinion on the role of technology relative to design?
SC: I think great design is an essential prerequisite before worrying about computer skills. But until you are proven, you have to have those computer skills to create the work that will give you the reputation. What seems more important in this highly interactive new world is focus on user experience and interaction design. In order to test interactive designs it is tremendously helpful to have the computer skills to prototype ideas.

"The trend seems to be going more interactive and less print. I see a day very soon, perhaps within two years, where the primary design focus is for the web and digital devices such as iPads and Kindles.

The print component will be a secondary consideration."
ADC: So the tech advantage is -
SC: The ability to prototype a design easily. If you can wow them with the actual design and not just describe it, you have a huge edge.

ADC: You guys have a great portfolio workshop planned for April 25th - tell me a little about it.
That seminar is called Get Your %^#@! Portfolio Online! (or make a better one). We put it together because at last year's holiday gatherings, I was amazed at how many designers and art directors gave me their business cards without a website address on it. How can *anyone* not have an online portfolio right now?

ADC: In your mind, how will desktop publishing evolve in the next 5 years?
I see a day very soon, perhaps within two years, where the primary design focus is for the web and digital devices such as iPads and Kindles. The print component will be a secondary consideration. Also the term desktop publishing is not really used anymore. Digital publishing would be more accurate.
