THE JURY SPEAKS
Wisdom From Judges of the 90th Annual Awards
Clockwise from top left: Wayne Best, Christopher Lane, Kristin Bergem, James Spence, Francisco Lopez, Maia Valenzuela

In honor of the upcoming Annual Awards Gala we asked members of the Awards Jury to share their thoughts on creativity and what they look for in a successful campaign. You can check out more in depth replies on our blog.

ADC: While judging here at the ADC what moments have you enjoyed the most?

Maia Valenzuela: The strongest pieces were the ones that weren't necessarily created by a large ad agency, but ones that were created from the heart of the artist, you can see the time and effort in the strongest pieces that were submitted, and it definitely separates the wheat from the chaff.

Danny Yount: The perspective of others and the reassurance that communication design is a universal language.

Rob Strasberg: Bathroom breaks.

ADC: What inspires you to create?

Wayne Best: Deadlines. Without them I wouldn't get anything done. Sure, I'm inspired by the talents of others, but without a firm due date, I would never complete anything.

Dan Mall: Reminding people that they're human. The ability to make someone laugh, cry, hurt, rejoice, and share is an incredibly powerful gift.
And money.

Paul Collins: 1. Lateral thinking; 2. Not technology for technology's sake; 3. Advertising that isn't advertising, and; 4. Shit that makes me laugh.
Top: Rob Strasberg; Bottom: Danny Yount

Top: Dan Mall; Bottom: Paul Collins   ADC: What are the key components to a strong campaign?

Kristin Bergem: A strong campaign no longer requires several components, it is all about strong executions - and often one is enough. I think we will see more and more campaigns where one great execution is the bearing element of a campaign. Simply because people do not pass on a whole campaign. They pass on the best component.

Christopher Lane: Humor and pushing the boundaries.

James Spence: A strong campaign is simply a strong idea. You can polish a turd as much as you like, but it'll still be a turd.

Francisco Lopez: Imagination, geniality and boldness.

Tom Hauser: Only guts. For the creatives to come up with a strong campaign and for the client to buy it.

ADC CORPORATE MEMBER
Iggesund Paperboard

Each month we ask a corporate member of the Art Directors Club to share some industry news with the greater ADC community. This month, Iggesund Paperboard had us sit down with Market Communications Director, Carlo Einarsson, to talk about their new 'Black Box' design challenge and NYC event coming up in on Monday, May 16.

ADC: Iggesund has already made a name for itself in the high-end cosmetic industry - what are you now trying to offer designers?
CE: In a single sentence I would say 'Designer Freedom'. Imagine not having to worry whether your brand extension or say product launch will be a success or not. We all know how important packaging is and the possibility to offer our customers a sort of assurance that from a packaging point of view the fine elements of seduction are in place. Invercote is a fine substrate that really invites you to test the boundaries of what is possible.

ADC: Tell me a little about the Black Box design project
CE: We felt that 'Think inside the box' would be a provocative theme because most designers strive to add a different perspective than that of their client. So far we've seen an impressive display of creativity - proving that limitations in terms of physical format place absolutely no limits on designers' freedom of thought.

  Carlo Einarsson

ADC: Have you seen any interesting submissions already?
Well, in Paris we introduced Frans van Heertum who made a beautiful flower from one single sheet of paper.

ADC: What is the May event in New York going to be like?
CE: We will be presenting Mr. Marc Benhamou at The Milk House on 16 May (5pm-10pm). Marc has an exceptional talent, to develop concepts into true images of beauty, really simplicity at its best.. I think it will be a fantastic show in New York and you will be amazed by Marc's work.

ADC: Complete the sentence: "If you think inside the box...."
... someone will always ask you to do the opposite. We try to be different and turning things around is usually more exciting and I think there is a little rebel in all of us.

This is an abridged interview, for more check out our blog.
