DDB New York : A conversation with the creative minds behind our 91st Annual Awards Call for Entries
This month the Art Directors Club launched the Call for Entries for its 91st Annual Awards, and tremendous buzz is already building around the campaign. DDB New York is the ADC's creative partner for the 91st Annual Awards, and developed all aspects of the campaign strategy and execution. The agency worked with Finnish illustrator Rami Niemi to design artwork for nine CFE posters and postcards showing humorous situations in the contemporary creative fields that illustrate the impediments and obstacles to creating great work. |
The project's Creative Director Menno Kluin and CCO Matt Eastwood took some time to talk about the campaign.
| |
DDB approached the Art Directors Club about partnering on the 91st Call for Entries. Why was this project interesting to your team?
Menno: It's the Call for Entries for the Art Directors Club. It's an honor, and for me personally it was a career goal. This assignment is also more open than most in terms of the brief, so was a great opportunity to express ourselves. This is a brief where you can truly say, "this is the type of work I want to do." As far as the campaign itself, I have always been attracted to graphically simple work and this was a great opportunity to do just that. Rami Niemi did a wonderful job of keeping the illustrations simple and clever.

What's the message and concept behind this year's campaign? Why do you think it's timely?
Matt:
No matter what your creative discipline, we all have a common enemy: The process. No one understands this better than the ADC. In an effort to empathize with creatives and rally them to do the best work of their careers, we developed a campaign that calls out many of these obstacles and absurdities in a satirical fashion. Thereby expressing that if creatives keep their eye on the prize and continue to fight the good fight, it will all be worth it in the end. It's definitely timely. The insight is based on a genuine truth within the industry. Now more than ever, the industry seems to be overrun by fear and focused all-too-often on profit alone. Great creative often takes a back seat. So we absolutely need to "keep fighting the good fight."
The ADC's Annual Awards reach every area of the creative fields: how do you create a campaign that speaks to creatives across such a range?
Matt: The beauty of the insight is that it's a universal truth faced by everyone in the creative industries. In many ways, the problems agency creatives face are the same problems that every creative faces. It doesn't matter if you are a photographer, illustrator, digital designer, or advertising creative. We all want to do great work and we all face the same hurdles.
Every year the necessity of the CFE being multiplatform expands: how did you approach this as a multi-component, interactive campaign? Anything exciting for the project we haven't seen yet?
Matt: There's definitely more to come. That's the great thing about Aron Fried and Carlos Wigle's idea. It's endless. We can keep going with new ideas in any media we care to. And we will. On a daily basis we are confronted with new hurdles that can be used as inspiration. Our hope is that "keep fighting the good fight" will start to be used anytime anyone is faced with an obstacle to delivering great creative.

Lewis Black recorded the audio track for the CFE videos; any fun anecdotes about that experience?
Menno:
After a lengthy session spent in the recording booth ranting against all of the process hurdles that creatives face, Lewis Black quipped that we made his fucking day and that it had been more therapeutic than a trip to his shrink's office.

In their sixteenth year, ADC's Saturday Career Workshops for high school students are going strong
The Art Directors Club Saturday Career Workshops bring together professionals in the creative industries to work hands-on with juniors from New York public high schools. This fall's program is in full swing, with stellar students representing over 15 participating schools and top-notch leaders. Ted Royer of Droga5 led students on creating pitches for Red Bull and Isabel Warren-Lynch, EAD, Random House, had them create 8-panel sequential narratives. Long-time ADC Members Elisa Halperin and Karen Cohn asked students to visually design the soundtrack to their lives.
Upcoming workshops include a trip to the International Center of Photography, a project led by Max Kalun, Young Gun 6 and designer at NYC Co. and the College Fair and Portfolio Review featuring SVA, Pratt, FIT, City Tech and Cooper Union.
