Bob Gill, ADC Hall of Fame Laureate and author of
Bob Gill, so far
Over a sixty-year career Bob Gill has created many of the key landmarks that make up the creative landscape of graphic design today. In his new book Bob Gill, so far, he guides us through that remarkable career from the first revolutionary designs and illustrations of the early 1960s to the graphic design and children's books of recent years. He was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1991 and among all of his other endeavors too numerous to list here, he also designed ADC's 65th Art Directors Annual cover.

You've previously created everything from children's books to works about the process of design that became required reading in the field. Bob Gill, so far is your nineteenth book, what was your goal for this project?

I thought it would be fun to take the most interesting jobs in all of my previous books and put them in a single book.

With projects like Beatlemania, you were a pioneer in the concept of multimedia. Now we've reached a point where virtually every project in the creative fields is multimedia, multi-platform, interactive. Do you think graphic design now requires an entirely different skill set from when you started your career, or do the same basic principles always apply?

Of course, designers have to be able to use the latest developments in communication, etc., etc., but, in the end, the most important thing to realize is that although everything is different today, nothing has really changed...designers still have to begin with an original, effective solution.

You co-founded D&AD and the agency that became Pentagram, and you've created some of the most iconic graphic design of the last six decades, along with filmmaking, books, teaching and more. This might be an impossible question, but can you pick a favorite project, or a proudest moment, from your long career?

My proudest moment is when I show my latest job to my wife, Sara [Fishko], who is the smartest, toughest critic I have ever met, and she likes it. And if she doesn't, she begins by saying, "I'm sorry, but..."

You can find a more detailed biography of Bob Gill in our Hall of Fame archive.

The exhibition Bob Gill, so far opens at the ADC Gallery January 9th and is on view through the 13th.

RSVP now for the book signing party on Thursday, January 12th. You can purchase the book online too!

A wrap-up of New York Types from our partners
at Leo Burnett

December 15th was the opening night for the New York Types exhibit at the Art Directors Club in New York, presented by New York Writes Itself and The Village Voice. Inspired by the 'Script' at www.newyorkwritesitself.com, the exhibition brings to life real words heard on the streets of New York City. We had an awesome time, and hopefully you did too. As you can see, we had a great turnout. We broke the 2011 attendance records at the ADC Gallery. (How's that for ending the year on a good note?)

Over 650 people (including those who acted as scribes and submitted the words they heard to the website) descended on the Art Directors Club for opening night where great art, live music and booze was enjoyed by all. Huge thanks to all the artists from Swayspace, Center for Book Arts, Peter Kruty Editions,Tarhorse Press, and The KDU. The show would have been pretty boring without you.

The innovative and extremely limited edition artwork was sold during the opening night and throughout the exhibition period. The pieces will be on sale in the near future. Stay tuned here. Thank you to everyone who helped out from Village Voice, Brooklyn Brewery, Leo Burnett NY, Dewar's, French Paper, DJ Synapse, Tonovision Photography, Bill Thomas and The Art Directors Club.

This event was inspired by New Yorkers, and brought to life by New Yorkers. Every piece of art in the show was inspired by a person, scene, or quote witnessed in NYC. Thank you to the scribes for contributing stories. Thank you to the people of New York who unknowingly catalyzed an amazing letterpress show. A lot of work went into making this event as great as it was. Thanks for being a part of it and we'll see you at the next New York Writes Itself event.

Get involved as a Scribe at www.newyorkwritesitself.com, and your everyday experiences of New York just might become part of the next New York Writes Itself experience, which could take the form of music, writing, photography, a short film or more.

Keep sharing your stories.

Frank Meo has created an exhilarating collection of indelible mental flash cards that reflects the indomitable strength of mind. By using simplicity of type he allows us the freedom to visualize moments that have been seared in our memory.
Meo feels "the most visually challenged among us can and does create images, Always". This show is a testimonial to the strength of imagination, the media and the mind.
